Welcome to the Fall '09 IDS 4934.0M04 section of Capstone Experience in Interdisciplinary Studies!
Over the next 16 weeks we will explore, evaluate, create, and reflect on a wide variety of topics. The primary focus of this course is to synthesize your existing content knowledge while focusing on skills development and application. In short, you will learn a few new things but primarily apply what you've already learned through your program of study to further enhance and sharpen skill sets to make you more effective at what you do or what you would like to do beyond college.
As with any course, you will have to manage your time/responsibilities carefully to ensure that you have ample time to devote to the Capstone course, your other academic courses, and your other obligations, both personal and professional. While I do not consider this course to be excessively demanding I have very high expectations for the quality of student work submitted in this course (you are graduating seniors after all and it is a reasonable expectation that you will be at the top of your academic game as such).
A complete course outline has been provided on the syllabus detailing all of the major and minor projects, presentations, and assignments for the semester. Most, if not all, of your assignments in his Capstone course will be due by Sunday evenings (midnight) or Thursdays before class (noon). The assignments on this Course Blog will be tied with each posting and will provide a clear set of instructions on what to do and the deadline to post. For example, I've tied an assignment to this welcome message so here's your chance to get started:
In the comments section, write a brief self-introduction highlighting the following:
1) Reason you chose UCF?
2) Intended future (career) goals?
3) If you could have any superpower, what would it be and why?
This may seem obvious but make sure to include your name in your introduction but not your PID. If you want to include such things as hometown, favorite music/movies, etc. - feel free but keep in mind that there is a limit on the size of the post you can make before you have to break it up into two posts and I'm only looking for a single post this time around.
Deadline to comment is Sunday, 08/30/2009, 11:59pm
Best wishes as we begin the Fall term and I look forward to working with you throughout this semester as you work toward graduation and life's next great adventure.

Danielle "Dani" Dennison...
ReplyDeleteI chose UCF for two core reasons. First, I am born and raised in Central Florida, so it was quite convenient. Second, because of the wonderful Rosen College of Hospitality Management. My hope is to continue to build a career in the Hospitality field. I have about 6 years experience in this field. And if I could have a super power it would be to run very fast so that I could travel the entire world rather quickly.
I decided to go to UCF because it was the closest university when I graduated from SCC. another reason I chose UCF is because several of my friends went there and liked it.
ReplyDeleteThis is where it starts to get tricky. I intend to either obtain a middle school science educator position or whatever career I can find that will take me and pay me more than the public school system. I would love to work with children or outside. If I could have it my way I would be a stay at home dad. I don't think that will work out, oh well.
If I had to pick a super power other than the ones that I currently posses I would have to go with the ability to fly. If I could fly I wouldn't need a motorcycle to get my kicks. I believe flying would prove to be a fun hobby.
Hello my name is Patrick Wall. When deciding on a college I knew that it would be in Florida because there was no way I was going to turn down bright futures. I ultimately ended up choosing UCF because of its close proximity to my home. As for my future career goals, getting a degree is a sort of backup plan for me. My dream is to be the drummer in a successful band where I could live off my music. Seeing as that is a difficult path to take I am hoping to get a job with a company working in optics for the time being. Finally if I had to choose one superpower the first thing that pops into my head is the power to read people's minds. I think that this skill would prove quite useful as interacting with others is very important for many of the challenges we face in life.
ReplyDeleteHi my name is Gina Thomas and I am one of the few born and raised Orlandonians. I hope to make the move after graduation!
ReplyDelete1) Reason you chose UCF?
Being that I'm an Orlandonian, it's close to home. Growing up, UCF has always been my #1 choice and my mom went here :) GO KNIGHTS!
2) Intended future (career) goals?
Singer-Songwriter/ Recording Artist / Sports-Entertainment Broadcasting reporter-on air personality
3) If you could have any superpower, what would it be and why?
My superpower would be to jump to any place in the world, like Hayden Christensen's character in the movie "Jumper." Air travel would be so much cheaper ;)
Good morning! My name is Rhonda Blair and my IDS B.S. degree is in Biomedical Sciences and Health with a Psychology minor.
ReplyDelete1) Reason you chose UCF?
I chose UCF because I grew up in Central Florida, Merritt Island, and I wanted to stay close to home. Although there were other options, UCF has proven to more than an "upcoming college" and is established. I have great pride in knowing this will be my Alma Mater!!
2) Intended future (career) goals?
After graduation in December, I will be starting my R.N. program at the Institute of Nursing at Brevard Community College. I have future goals of returning to school to become a Doctor of Osteopathy or a Nurse Practitioner.
3) If you could have any superpower, what would it be and why?
Fun Question!! I would like the power of instant transportation. I always have so many tasks with my three children, work and school. Also, I need and want to be at so many places at in a short time frame. It would be more than convenient to be able to cut out travel time and travel constraints!!

ReplyDeleteI thought i might add that im from Huntington NY, and my favorite movie is Cool Hand Luke. I thought that everyone might have been wondering. well probably not, but if you were, now you know.
Hi. I'm Kati.
ReplyDeleteI chose UCF because I liked the distance from my hometown Melbourne. I originally attended FSU, and felt lost in such a big town with my family over eight hours away. I want to be an Archivist once I finish graduate school, which I plan to attend next semester or the semester following. If I could have any superpower it would be time travel, there are a lot of things that I would do differently with my academic career.
Hello all, my name is Joseph Zingaretti, and I chose UCF because of all the free money they were giving me to come here. I also had some friends down here in Orlando, and I wanted to be far enough from home that I wasn't expected to come home every weekend, but close enough to home to return whenever I wanted to, and by the way, that is Destin, FL. So, UCF was the perfect school for this. I really hoped to work at NASA for my career, but right now, that doesn't really seem an option anymore so I am currently deciding what I want to do. I am not picky, so whatever will help me provide for my wife sounds great to me. The superpower I would like to have is very similar to Aquaman's, where I could breath underwater and communicate with animals and bid them to do what I wanted. How awesome would that be!?!?!
ReplyDeleteHi! I'm Ada, and I'm an Orlando native... I'm an artist, but I'm also very interested in science, and my academic career has kind of been split between these. I adore horror movies (my favorites are probably 'Re-Animator' and 'Shaun of the Dead', and my favorite musical genres are classic rock and rockabilly (though I listen to just about everything). The Ramones, the Beatles, and Led Zeppelin comprise basically my holy trinity of music.
ReplyDeleteI chose to attend UCF because my main focus when I started college was computer science, and I knew this was an excellent school for people going into that field. Honestly, though, I've realized that it's really not what I want to do with the rest of my life, and my goal once I graduate is to start my own art business. (I've been running my own business part-time for several years, but now I'm ready to try to do it full-time.)
As far as superpowers, I think I would choose shapeshifting. I figure that would allow me to do just about anything, including flying...
I chose UCF when I was young and didn’t know any better to get out of Florida. It is cheap and close to home so at that point in my life it was the benefit that it offered to me and still holds true but if I could do it over I would have chose somewhere else.
ReplyDeleteMy intended future goals are to go to physician’s assistant school and to travel outside of the United States providing health care in less fortunate countries.
If I had a superpower it would be to educate people because I think that if we were all educated and valued the power of knowledge everyone would be better off, me included.
Hey, my name is Shellee King. I chose UCF because it was the closest choice to home. I've lived in Kissimmee most of my life and I couldn't imagine being any further away from mom. As far as my future career goals go, my plans are to go into the hospital field as some sort of tech. or lab assistant. From there I hope to find what specific area I am interested in. If I could have any superpower I would probably want to be able to read minds. I want to know what people expect from me without me having to guess sometimes and I would also like to know when I'm being lied to.
ReplyDeleteHi, Brian Villar. I chose UCF because of the choices it had for majors, since I was coming in as undecided it worked in my favor. Also it was far enough from home but still some what close. My plans so far is to obtain my masters and see if I can either enter the teaching field or continue with my hobby of film making and maybe make something out of it. And for any super power i would have to go with accelerated healing powers so that way after a while I will just keep living through centuries and keep on learning and see how things change.
ReplyDeleteHey, my name is Cheyenne Black. I choose UCF because it is a great University. It is one of the few universities that I could live on the beach and surf daily and still attend a great school. In January I am moving to Maui, HI. I plan to get a job at a fansy hotel or resort using my minor in hospitality management. If I could have any super power... it would be to be able to make perfect waves so I didn't have to move 4,000 miles away. :)
ReplyDeleteMy name is Scott Sutton. I chose UCF mainly because of its location. Another reason is that UCF had a satellite campus at my junior college in Daytona Beach which served to spark my interests. After graduation I will be attending Palmer College of Chiropractic in Port Orange with the hopes of achieving my DOC (Doctor of Chiropractics). As far as a Super Power is concerned, I think I would choose invisibility. This would allow the opportunity to be the proverbial "fly on the wall" and therefore know what people truly expect from you.
ReplyDeleteHey guys, my name is Mary Wilson.
ReplyDelete1) Reason you chose UCF?
I chose UCF because my art teacher/mentor in high school attended the University. I came here with unnecessarily high expectations of the department.
2) Intended future (career) goals?
Let's just skip the career part, there isn't one thing (at this time) that I could completely dedicate myself to for the rest of my life. However, I would like to accomplish things in my life such as the pursuit of my own artistic endeavors, finding a way to help other people, and exploring as much of the world as possible.
3) If you could have any superpower, what would it be and why
It's cliche, but I would chose invisibility, and use that to fulfill my dreams of exploration.
My name is Amanda Frasure. A few reasons I chose UCF are because I grew up in Titusville, which is only 30 minutes away, and that my father graduated from UCF in the '80s. After graduation I hope to get apprenticeship-type jobs at bakeries so I can learn everything I can. If the opportunity rises, I also hope to attend culinary school and pursue my dream of owning my own bakery. My super power of choice would be the ability to breathe under water. That way I could never drown, and if one of my friends was in trouble in the water, I could save them with ease.
ReplyDeleteHello all, my name is Justin Sirizzotti. The main reason I chose to attend UCF was the film programs great reputation. The program did not disappoint and allowed me to gain the skills required to become a more than competent editor. After graduation I plan to relocate to the big apple to begin my internship with a wonderful little production company. If I had any superpower it would have to be the ability to create remarkable pieces pottery to sell at art fairs and farmers markets all across the nation.
ReplyDeleteHi! My name is Kaitlyn Ferreri. I'm an Aries vegetarian from Atlanta, and my absolute favorite thing to do is to travel. I just got back from a trip to Hong Kong and it was amazing!!! The reason I came to UCF is that it is theclosest university to where my parents now live in Clearwater- well, except for USF, but that's a little TOO close, if you know what I mean. Other deciding factors were that my sister was already in school here, and I'm not going to lie, it has a really pretty campus! As for my future career goals, I'm devoting all of my non-school time this semester towards finding job to start off with- hopefully as an assistant with economic consulting or some other form of business analysis. And my superpower? I would have to say... the perpetual suspension of judgment. I think you can live life best if you're constantly awake in the moment and looking at things as if for the first time. So there you go! Have a good Sunday night all!
ReplyDeleteHey my name is Janelle Warren. I was born and raised in Orlando so I have many friends and family that live in the area, many of them attending UCF or have attended. I plan to go into the physical therapy field and also hope to own a plant nursery in New Smyrna Beach with my boyfriend one day. If I could have one super power, it would to be like Poseidon to be able to make waves exactly how I want for myself and all my fellow surfers. Hope everyone had a great weekend, I sure did thanks to Danny kicking up some surf!
ReplyDeleteHi my name is Peter Leiner. When I was finishing up high school and had to make the decision about what college I would attend I chose UCF. The reason was financially UCF was the best choice. I plan on continuing my education after this semester to eventually reach my career goal of being a lawyer. If i could have any super power I would want to be able to fly. I have always been fascinated with birds and how majestic they are soaring through the sky and I would love to experience that.
ReplyDeleteHi my name is Ryan Kaye. I was born and raised in Ft. Lauderdale most of my life. The reason why I chose to attend UCF was because it wasnt too far away from home but far enough to where I felt like I was on my own in a college environment. After I graduate from UCF this fall I hope to start working in the Marketing industry preferably focusing on golf. If I could have any super power in the world it would be speed. I like getting things done quick and it would be nice to get anywhere in the world in an instant.
ReplyDeleteHi, my name is Lisa Beni. I was born in Venice, Italy, grew up in New York, and have lived in Florida for over 20 years, raised a family, etc.
ReplyDelete1.) I chose UCF to help me complete my mid-life transition period which includes a 400-mile commute for Thursday's class.
2.) My Minor is English Writing with Areas in Psychology and Law.
3.) If I could have a Superpower--it would be the ability to heal people from the inside out without drugs or healthcare bureaucracy, just through critical thinking, empathy and commitment.
I apologize for blogging late, however, I was busy this weekend passing a kidney stone and had to prioritize.
Hello, my name is Natyeli. I chose UCF because it was far enough from home to try something new but close enough to come back if I needed.
ReplyDeleteIn the future I would like to teach elementary school students and possibly ESOL classes.
As far as superpowers go, I would be torn between reading minds and flying. Mind reading because I already try to do that with little success when it matters most and flying because it would make travel much easier.
Hello,
ReplyDeleteMy name is Richard Chiarantona (Karen-toe-nah), but you can all call me Rich.
In 2006, I transferred to UCF from Indian River State College to complete a Film BA. Upon moving to Orlando, I got a job at AutoTrader.com. After about a year, I was promoted, and worked fulltime before COX Media decided to shut down Orlando’s office; LAID OFF!
It’s not all bad, though… I am completing my degree with two minors (Film and Communications), and an “area” in behavioral/social sciences at UCF; changed from film to Interdisciplinary Studies. After that, I am going to pursue a career in TV or radio broadcasting.
1)Reason you chose UCF? -I chose UCF because my sister and other family members are Alumni.
2)Intended future (career) goals? -I intend on involving myself in TV and radio news, TV and film production, and possibly politics in the future *hopefully make 6 figures or more in whatever I do.
3) If you could have any superpower, what would it be and why? -I would like to influence people (get them to do whatever I want) by touch… that sounded a bit creepy.
Well, I look forward to working with you all throughout the semester!
-Rich
My name is Michael Grasso. I am 23 years of age and currently reside in Orlando florida. I am from Boca Raton Florida witch is 3 hours south of Orlando. I am very motivated when it comes to academics and am going to become a chiropractor in 4 year time. I also love to do water sports on my spare time.
ReplyDelete1) Reason you chose UCF?
There are many reasons that I choose UCF. One of them is that it is close to my family and hometown witch is Boca Raton Florida. Another important reason I choose UCF is because I own a Wakeskate company named Oak Wakeskates. Orlando is the center point for all water sports mainly due to our weather and location. Academically speaking UCF had every class I needed to take in order to accomplish my goals before graduate school.
2) Intended future (career) goals?
I just got accepted to Palmer Chiropractic College in Daytona Florida. This is my most important career goal. I want to to graduate and open my own practice close to my family. On a side note, I am pushing my board company to grow each and everyday. Me and my partner are also starting a clothing company named Oak Clothing. All of this keeps me very busy.
3) If you could have any superpower, what would it be and why?
If I could have any super power it would be to fly. It might sound humorous now, but it is mainly because I do a lot of traveling, and if I could fly I would be able to be places in a split second. I could be at UCF in the morning and at a business meeting in NY in the afternoon. Which would leave me more time to study and get other things done.
Hello Peter Leiner here. I do not think my degree from UCF has been worthwhile. Over the passed four years I have obtained very little knowledge that I believe will help make me successful in my future studies in law school. I feel that the tuition that I paid was not right but I could deal with these high prices if it included things such as parking and books. Even if you look over a long period of time I currently am not earning enough to pay for my school and will be leaving with debt. In the long run ill be able to pay this off but still it was way to expensive. If i could go back to high school and do it all again I would of joined the marines. I would of been able to get my education and represent something better then the mess that is our education system. I might change my major but one of the things I have enjoyed is that I was given the opportunity in IDS to select classes that I at least enjoyed, even if I was not learning by the bundles.
ReplyDeleteWell, the login didn't work as discussed, but one zero does not a semester make.
ReplyDeleteI am Robert Walls, and celebrated my 43rd birthday during the summer break. I do what I can when I can for family, friends, and those asking me of something I can do.
I chose UCF as a logical progression from Valencia Community College to get my Bachelor's Degree. Like most there are other reasons, but practicality seems more acceptable to me.
My future goal is to enter into a full time job, but there are forks in that road based on completion of this step. A number of professors could not understand why companies would not hire me without a college degree as I was very astute and knowledgeable in their classes.
I would not want a superpower at all. After graduating high school for most of us, there were more responsibilities and duites thrust upon us than education had prepared us for, and no one considered our natural gifts or affinties. For me personally, I step forward to lead when no other does or fails to see a bigger picture. I agree with the saying, "Isn't it evil enough that good men do nothing?"
Peter Leiner.
ReplyDeleteEffective communication in my opinnion is one of the single most important skills an individual could have. This skill is something that is very hard to improve but if the opportunity presents itself I suggest that you utilize it. A way I really improved both my verbal and non-verbal communication was by visiting a country that English is not the first language. In doing this I was forced to use non-verbal communication and really sound out and think of the simplest way to ask my questions.
With communication I believe I have both strengths and weakness like everyone. A strength would be how well I articulate and the eye contact I am able to make and keep while speaking. A weakness however would be that even among friends I still use more of a formal language that depicts me sometimes as cold and unfriendly.
These skills could always improve. I hope to continue extending my vocabulary as well as learn how to better utilize the changing of tones to show my emotions in speech.
1) I chose UCF because it was the most affodable out of the 3 choices I had for an advertising program in my state.
ReplyDelete2) My future goals include travel to Europe and a a job as a ad campaign manager for a major corporation.
3) My superpower would be: The Zack morris time out from saved by the bell. He had the ability to stop space and time for an unspecified amount of time. This way he was able to have ample time to decipher any situation.
Hi! My name is Monica Barsky and i chose UCF because it was far from home, but not too far away...I am a semester away from receiving my degree with a major in Interdisciplinary Studies, and a minor in Elementary Education. In addition, I hold two concentrations in Psychology and Humanities. That being said, my career goals is to take my FTC certification exam at the end of this month. I have always felt that teaching was my “calling.” Being able to have the pleasure to experience the gift of shaping and inspiring young minds, especially in the early stages of learning, has always been a long-term goal of mine. I also have the intention to join the peace corps in the near future. If i could have any superpower it would be to read minds, even thought ignorance is bliss... it still would be interesting to know the brutal truth at times!
