Research-Based Creative Project Idea Incubator

We spent quite a bit of time toward the end of class this past Thursday discussing the research-based creative project that will be due toward the end of the semester. I had asked you to consider research related to your chosen field of endeavor tied with UCF's Unifying Theme: Globate Climate Change (in essence, researching an aspect of how your field impacts the environment or how the environment impacts your field - and creating a research-based creative project based on your research).

In the comments section, indicate:

1) What are your draft research topics (i.e. what do you think you'd like to research)?

2) What media (electronic, print, sculpture, painting, etc.) are you considering for your creative project?

Deadline to comment is Sunday, 10/04/2009, 11:59pm

26 comments:

  1. 1) I would like to research the entire area of environmentally friendly baking appliances and tools. I want to enter the baking/pastry culinary field.

    2) The types of media I am considering are between a diaramma and a painting. I hope to bring some edible components to the table as well.

  2. Originally I wanted to research overpopulation and it's effects but I see no way to tying that into the field in which I hope to enter after graduation. So instead I am now considering exploring environmental documentary films and their effect on public awareness. My only concern is whether or not I am going to find enough source material.

Given my field of study and topic I am considering producing a short film.

  3. I think one of the things I would like to research is about space debris and its impact on the environment of our Earth. I am totally fascinated by outer space and believe that this would be a great research topic.

One type of media I am considering is video, because even though space debris is a large problem because of its potential hazards associated with it, it can produce wonderful “shooting stars” because of the debris that falls to Earth gets burned up in the atmosphere. Also, I want to bring in examples of the size of the debris, because one would be quite surprised about how small most of the debris really is.

  4. My focus is Hospitals and that environmental impact. I am vacillating between focusing on the air quality environment within the hospital itself to outside wastes. I keep going back to the air quality within a hospital, though. I might have to wait and see what the research pans out for me. I'll have to go with whichever works best in the format.

As far as my final project. I'm stuggling. A really good diorama would be perfect, but too expensive to do correctly. I am thinking of taking a folding presentation board (like for the poster presentation) and painting a hospital scene. I would then take removable pieces to demonstrate how hospitals used to run (non-green) and change them, with a short demonstration, to what they are now doing to be more environmentaly friendly. I am a bit stuck.

  5. 1) What are your draft research topics (i.e. what do you think you'd like to research)?

I never would have thought of the idea of CD's and plastic cases. I'm really interested in this topic and I think I'm going to do my research on this :)

    2) What media (electronic, print, sculpture, painting, etc.) are you considering for your creative project?

As far as my creative project I'm thinking either a video or print/poster type visual. I love to do things that are creative, but Im somewhat electronically challenged so this is something I'm going to have to brainstorm about.

  6. I guess my draft research topic would be the ways the world governments have taken to help with global warming. With part of my area is behavioral and social science, this would fit in with the Political Science aspect of it.

The way that I would present this would be though a documentary, since cinema studies is one of my minors.

  7. 1) an increase in the tropical viruses such as malaria and yellow fever due to an increase in the number of hosts from an increased global temperature or the withering of the ozone and the increase in skin cancer.

    2) some form of electronic probably power point

  8. 1) What are your draft research topics (i.e. what do you think you'd like to research)?

I'm not 100% committed to this yet, but I'm considering researching Green anarchism / Anarchist naturism. I'm interested in this as a sort of subset of anarchist culture, which goes along with my studies in behavioral & social sciences. I'd like to examine what green anarchists do to make their lives more environmentally responsible and how these acts reflect the values of their culture. Ideally, I'd like to find enough quantifiable data to really examine the effectiveness of these lifestyle choices.

    2) What media (electronic, print, sculpture, painting, etc.) are you considering for your creative project?

I may try to do this in video (documentary?) format; if not I may try to do it as a poster or PowerPoint.

  9. 1) In a brief literal search, I came across the concept of "business ecosystem" coined by a James Moore. Within that context, IT is a global leader in many activities which impact the natural environment through constructions and deconstructions to support the varying intrusions of computer systems in different industries around the world.

    2) A diorama or video come to the forefront as probable mediums. The limit for me isn't form with the given choices, but the time to completion is a majore factor in my choice.

  10. Well I must say the theme of environment / climate change has thrown me. I know this is an important issue and one I used to be very passionate about, but now... not so much. But that it why I am trying to focus on something within the Hospitality industry that interests me. The two topics that I am bouncing around are:
    1) The impact of climate change on wine costs and supply, specifically ice wine which is a very popular, gourmet wine that a lot of high end restaurants and hotels offer. If indeed the Earth is warming then the supply of ice wine is shrinking and becoming more costly. This topic however may only be interesting to myself.
    2) If I want a broader topic then I would research how the Green Lodging standards have impacted service qualities in hotels and cruise ships. This I think would have a broader impact and may be easier to research.

I will use articles mostly and other research papers. I would most likely present with a Power Point and other physical / visual aids depending on which topic I choose.

  11. 1)I look forward to researching the environmental changes the house keeping departments of hotels and resorts are making. I think there will be more green movemets than I realize.

    2) I will most likely do a diorama. Or maybe a picture show of some sort, that shows the differences these changes are making.

  12. One of the topics that I am thinking about is how different types of pollutants are affecting our environment and how that can be tied to education.

I'm not sure how I will make this creative. I am considering making a short film with interviews. I am still in the brainstorming stage of the development process.

  13. I am thinking of doing my research on either the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) or CAFE (Corporate Average Fuel Economy) rating systems. I have read some interesting things on both fronts but have not made a final decision yet.

As for the type of media I would like to be able to do something a bit more interesting or unique than the traditional powerpoint or similar style presentation but I am not sure exactly what.

  14. I want to get into marketing/advertisement but I believe children are our most valuable resource. Without them, we dont really have a future in a shitty earth or a clean one. I want to properly inform children that the environment is to be respected and preserved. This is important to think about from an early age, children are more likely to do the right thing or the politically and morally correct thing idf they feel directly involved with their surroundings. The root of much social conflict or deviance is because of detachment from their environment. That's my sociology taking shape.

I want to create a series of illustrative posters specially geared towards children and adolescents. These posters will properly relay a message of global maintenance.

  15. 1) What are your draft research topics (i.e. what do you think you'd like to research)?

I'm actually entering the field of Chiropractic. In this field and I suppose many other fields a lot of the professionals are going paperless. I.e. electronic sign in, email appointment notifications, digital patient files etc...

I think I would like to research the effect of going paperless has had on our environment as well as the affect it could have in the future.

    2) What media (electronic, print, sculpture, painting, etc.) are you considering for your creative project?

I believe that the proper media will be revealed as I do the research. However for the sake of this blog I will say a digital medium such as power point or video.

  16. My Focus is on Marketing as well as Hospitality. I would like to do something with golf and how the pesticides that they use on the greens effect our environment.

Im not positive what I am going to do yet for my research based project but I was thinking about making a few posters and a powerpoint or maybe even a short video.

  17. 1) My focus will be on education so I was thinking about doing something about the use of textbooks or printouts.

    2) I was thinking of maybe doing something artistic since I like that kind of stuff. Painting or sculpture. I really need to think about how to put it all together into one concept though.

  18. 1)I would like to research the introduction of technology and western "ideals"/education into once sustainable and community oriented societies. Since this impacts culture, to a great extent, I believe this relates to the humanities.

    2) Although I enjoy painting, I would want to integrate text easily. I believe an awesome way to accomplish this would be to create a poster.

  19. 1) What are your draft research topics (i.e. what do you think you'd like to research)?
As I discussed with you in class I’ll need to do extensive research to commit/design a topic that could apply to your Project, Integration and show some brain-stretching.

    2) What media (electronic, print, sculpture, painting, etc.) are you considering for your creative project?
I do not have technical media skills which puts me at a disadvantage. I therefore will have to settle for print [‘diorama’?]—where my right-brained background and skills are applicable, vis-à-vis my IDS Degree: 1) Area…English Writing; 2) Minors…Psychology, Law (+ Forensic Psychology).

In my workplace experience we outsourced “technical creativity” thru vendors--I don’t have the luxury, finances nor technical depth--so I can only work with the skills and tools I possess. The “media aspect” may be imbalanced (during presentation time) because the people who have years of technical education/experience will stand out and shine—unlike the more right-brained people like myself. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve done presentations before, but it was usually written, or if not—the creativity was left to my own chosen design. Like I said, I’ll need to feel comfortable with a topic after I’ve committed to choosing it, as it’s out of my diverse areas of theses--let alone figure out the presentation media, when I’m not set on the topic. The topic is the foundation and I will build from there…

  20. 1) My focuses are Education and Social/Behavioral Sciences (Anthropology mostly). I would like to research the effect of recycling on human culture. Things like the formation of certain subcultures, such as communes. (which aren't new, but are becoming more popular.)

    2) I think my presentation will be electronic but I would like to incorporate some other type of media.

  21. 1) What are your draft research topics (i.e. what do you think you'd like to research)?

My research topic is going to on X rays. In chiropractic, you need to take alot of chest X-rays. In my case im going to use all electronic X ray machine, In the old days the actual process of developing an X ray was harmful for the environment.

    2) What media (electronic, print, sculpture, painting, etc.) are you considering for your creative project?
I am not 100 % sure what i'm going to do yet, but i just learned how to edit video. I might put together a video showing the difference between the two and how one is more environmentally friendly then the other.

  22. 1) I would like to research biohazards in hospitals and what they do with them to discard them.

    2) I was thinking about using sculpture or painting to express my creative project. I'm not quite sure of which one though.

  23. I already have a set idea for what I plan to do my creative research project on. It's something my boyfriend and I have been talking about for awhile when we do finally own our own plant nursery by the beach. We notice the lack of natural dunes on the beach which expodites beach erosion. Our plan is to replenish the beach with native plants that helps stabilize dune formation versus seawalls. The media I plan to use is mainly through pictures I have taken at various beaches including Canaveral National Seashore and New Smyrna Beach. Though these pictures I plan on showing the difference in having a natural ocean barrier versus a man made barrier. In my project I will do even more extensive research on the natural habitat of our Florida East Coast and what plants will help sustain our natural coastal environment.

  24. 1)I am entering the field of Law and I have become really interested in environmental law. I plan on taking a look into possible regualtions for new renewable resources and the causes that are forcing them into actions.
2)I think for my project I am going to use a venn diagram but I am also considering doing a painting, still not sure. I want to see where the evidence brings me and then make a decision

  25. 1) My future career is elementary education and i would like to do some research perhaps on the cognitive learning in the environment in elementary students. Also, looking into the impact of how the environment effects the peer education.

    2) The media media im thinking of working on in order to express my project on this subject is not 100% sure yet, but im thinking of doing a documentary on reliable sources and putting a power point together/video to tie it in with my research... Still thinking of creative ideas for it!

  26. I’m going to be researching the affects of radio towers (and the electromagnetic broadcast signals) on the environment.
Specifically, I’m interested in studies that show plants, animals, and humans have been affected in any way.

I am considering making a video as part of the creative project because Cinema Studies is one of my areas.
The idea is to tie all three of my areas, plus the environment, into this project.
